| Turns out “reduce fees for us” is the second-to-last thing your clients want from your use of AI. | ||||
| The Agency Edge is our annual study of the people who hire agencies — this year, 400 of them buying from small-to-mid-sized marketing shops. We group them by what they believe rather than by industry or budget, and three client mindsets came back. All three want the same thing from AI, and a discount is nowhere near the top of the list. | ||||

What you would expect, from the way this industry talks about AI, is one direction of travel on money: the work gets faster, so the fee comes down, and the only argument left is how far. What the data says is that cutting your fee is close to the last thing they are asking for. What they want more of is your thinking.

Read that 51% carefully, because it is conditional. Clients expect the fee to fall if AI reduces the time a job takes — which only bites you if time is what you sold them. AI visibly makes hours cheaper and your clients can see that as plainly as you can. What it does not touch is judgment. And when you ask them directly, hours are not what they are asking about. Asked what they expect their agencies to do because of AI, clients put better effectiveness, better strategy and better ideas at the top, each at 52%. “Reduce fees for us” came in at 29%, sixteenth out of twenty options. And the clients most likely to walk are already sorted. 42% of clients expect to reduce their reliance on agencies in favor of AI tools they can run themselves. Among Strategic Stewards it is 11%. The clients leaving with the software are largely the ones who were already treating you as a supplier, and the Strategic Stewards who treat you as an advisor are not only staying, they are the readiest of anyone to pay a premium — 87%, against 82% of clients overall.
